Clement EB20 steel windows specified in the Hampstead Garden Suburb

The Hampstead Garden Suburb is an historic suburb located in London, known for its notable architecture and peaceful surroundings. It was founded in 1907 by Dame Henrietta Barnett. The layout of the Suburb was designed by Raymond Unwin and Edwin Lutyens and the accommodation there represents the best of English domestic architecture of the early twentieth century.

Any changes made to the buildings within the Suburb need to be compliant with the Hampstead Garden Trust’s requirements and also those of the local council. Clement’s Brooking and EB20 steel window ranges have been approved and are often specified in the area.

This semi-detached Arts & Crafts family home needed modernising to work for the requirements of a young family. It has now been beautifully transformed. Internally, the design was guided by the continuity of dark oak, lifted as a tonal reference from the home’s original staircase handrails, which remain untouched as a reminder of the home’s roots.

Clement EB20 steel windows and W40 steel doors were chosen to replace the fenestration as they look so similar to the originals. The new slim frames not only offer improved thermal efficiency but they also fill the rooms with lots of natural light.

The Architect, Eleni Mertzidi said: “Our design hinged on respectfully modernising this historic family home while preserving its character. The choice of Clement’s approved steel windows was key. The EB20 and W40 ranges allowed us to maintain the home’s original elegance and sightlines, directly supporting the conservation requirements, while significantly enhancing internal daylighting and the overall performance required. We look forward to working with Clement on future projects.”
