LISTED & HERITAGE PROJECTS

Clement Listed Buildings & Heritage Projects

At Clement, we have a wealth of experience when it comes to replacing steel windows and steel doors at heritage properties.

Replacing or upgrading the windows and doors at a listed property is likely to require Listed Building Consent, as well as in some cases planning permission and Building Regulations approval. Gaining the requisite permission can be a lengthy process, so it is vital that you speak to a planning and conservation expert early on to establish what is possible.

Planners will generally prefer to see replacements which match the existing or original fenestration as closely as possible. It should be noted that even upgrading to double glazing can be seen as a change to the appearance of windows and doors.

Clement’s exceptionally slim-framed steel doors and windows are all made bespoke to individual orders so providing a close match is what we do best! The hot rolled steel profiles that we use to manufacture our heritage steel windows and doors can be moulded into all manner of elegant shapes and designs appropriate for a range of different architectural styles.

Clement offers several product ranges which are appropriate for heritage projects, including: the EB20 range which has an angled/chamfered beading designed to replicate the old-style putty fronting and achieves a “B” Window Energy Rating, the SMW range which was devised for replacement work in historic buildings where double glazing is not an option and the Brooking range which was developed for high value refurbishments. Clement Conservation Rooflights are regularly specified by Architects and Conservation Officers for listed buildings and heritage projects.

All of our steel windows and doors are hot dip galvanised and available in a choice of highly durable polyester powder paint colours.

There are several options when it comes to glazing, including different patterned leaded lights and the G+ system which mimics the look of original Georgian bars.

This is what some recent clients involved with heritage buildings have said about Clement:

“Replacing the original 100 year old leaded light windows was a huge decision. Our house is locally listed in a Conservation Area so aesthetics were very important. We wanted to retain the look of the house but also the feel and quality of the windows was important. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the outcome. Clement were extremely helpful and friendly throughout the design, build and installation of the windows which was very quick in freezing January conditions. The house is quieter, warmer and altogether more comfortable. In fact, a recent energy survey showed that we are losing more heat through the uninsulated cavity walls than through the windows.” Residential Client, Surrey

“Clement provided an excellent bespoke solution for our Grade II listed property, including individual templating of multiple arched windows with slight variations to ensure a perfect fit. This enabled us to satisfy Listed Building requirements, significantly improve energy efficiency – as well as open and close them in the normal way, a big improvement over the previous inconvenient and obstructive bottom-hinged configuration. Considering the effort involved in a completely bespoke solution, they were also good value for money. The end result looks great and several neighbours already have or are considering using Clement.” Residential Client, Middlesex

“Steel windows manufactured by Clement were the right choice because of their close match to the existing heritage windows at Ladywell Convent.” Michael O’Brien, O&D Construction

“This Grade II Listed Building was in a dilapidated state and required meticulous and painstaking reconstruction. The inclusion of Clement’s Conerservation Rooflights helped us to stay true to the original character of the property whilst also meeting the demands of Building Regulations.” Rhys Brookes, Harrison Brookes Architects
