What is PAS 24?

Publicly Available Specification 24, commonly known as PAS 24, is a demanding UK security standard for windows and doors. It demonstrates that products have successfully passed a series of rigorous physical and mechanical tests carried out at a UKAS accredited laboratory.

PAS 24 testing evaluates a product’s resistance to forced entry. The tests simulate common methods of attack, such as levering, cutting and manipulating hardware, to assess the strength and integrity of the frame, locking points, glazing and fixings.

Do I need PAS 24?

PAS 24 is a legal requirement for all new build homes and certain property conversions in England, Wales and Scotland. It is the primary method used by developers and architects to comply with Approved Document Q of the Building Regulations.

For existing listed buildings, PAS 24 is not always a strict legal requirement when replacing windows and doors. Local Conservation Officers may instead encourage sympathetic solutions that preserve original historic features and exemptions are often granted for heritage properties.
