Steel framed doors and screens have become a prominent feature in homes and office spaces across the UK.  Architects and designers use these glass and steel partitions to enhance residential and commercial projects, creating innovative spaces that give the illusion of greater openness.

Steel windows and the Art Deco movement

Although the pioneering production process dates back to the mid 19th century, steel windows gained real popularity in the immediate years following the First World War and have adorned buildings in the UK ever since.  Due to its malleability, durability and strength, steel quickly overtook timber as the most popular fenestration choice as is seen in the elegant buildings of the Art Deco period.

Modern applications of steel in fenestration

Today, adaptable steel and glass frames are perfect to support the ever changing construction and interior design trends that emerge every year.  The resurgence of steel partitions in recent years for both commercial and residential buildings is an exciting chapter in the history of steel windows.  Not only are steel framed doors and screens a great choice, the use of thin, lightweight glass to separate living spaces can maximise areas inside smaller properties by flooding each room with daylight.

In a modern age where environmentally friendly products take precedence, steel has emerged as a clear favourite around the world. As steel can be reused infinitely, it is frequently chosen over its counterparts, such as PVC and aluminium.  At Clement, we use profiles made from 98% recycled steel to produce our hot rolled steel windows and doors and continue our commitment to all areas of sustainability.

High performance steel screens

As pioneers of the steel screen trend, Clement transformed office space at 188 Fleet Street in London.  Formerly the home of bankers Coutts & Co, this 35,000 sq ft building was refurbished to house a publishing company and Clement W20 bespoke steel screens feature throughout, increasing the amount of daylight that filters through the space and contributing to the improved wellbeing of the office workers.  Architect Martin Helyer of HD Architects commented: “We chose Clement Windows due to their external aesthetic aiding the feel that the space was not purely internal.”

The natural progression of steel framed glass from the external to the internal will continue to shape interior design in the UK and beyond for years to come.  Steel framed doors, windows and screens are a regular feature in respected design and lifestyle magazines and have become firmly established as desirable features to include in your home.

We are proud to share that we have tested a Clement fire screen and single door to 30 minutes and this product is an ideal feature for commercial and multi-use buildings.  A major feature of the fire screen is the very slender profiles, meaning you do not have to compromise on style.
