Clement Windows Group has been a replacement steel windows and doors supplier to the Hampstead Garden Suburb in North London for a number of years. Here we take a look at the history of this London conservation area and some of the projects we’ve undertaken.
Hampstead Garden Suburb is internationally recognised as one of the finest examples of early 20th century domestic architecture and town planning. Conceived by Henrietta Barnett as a model community of beautiful houses set in a verdant landscape, the properties in the Suburb were designed by some of the best architects of the day.

Today, the Suburb comprises around 5,000 properties in total and is home to some 16,000 people. In 1968 it was designated as a Conservation Area and the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust was set up to maintain the character and amenity of properties within the Suburb. The Trust operates a management scheme which requires freeholders to get prior approval before altering the external appearance of their properties, meaning that the Suburb survives relatively intact and still reflects the original vision of Barnett and master planner Raymond Unwin.
A lot of the properties in Hampstead Garden Suburb have original steel framed windows and the Trust stipulates that replacement windows must be very similar to the originals. Clement Windows Group has two main window ranges which are suitable for these properties and have been used in the projects that we’ve completed in the Suburb to date.
Our Brooking range of steel windows was developed in conjunction with the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust and other conservation bodies and takes its name from internationally renowned collector and architectural historian Charles Brooking. The range is particularly suitable for high value refurbishment projects or specialist architectural situations where a particular ‘putty fronted’ system is required.
Additionally, Clement’s EB20 steel windows are exceptionally slender, high specification steel windows which replicate existing or original steel windows. Clement’s W20 steel profiles are also appropriate for replacement steel doors in this Conservation Area.
At Clement, we’ve recently manufactured and installed new steel windows and doors at a number of properties in the area. Below we take a look at some of our favourites.
The new steel windows and doors at this Arts & Crafts style house in Hampstead Garden Suburb provide a perfect match to the original fenestration.
This beautiful house was fitted with new leaded Brooking windows and W20 steel doors, and showcases how similar new replacement steel frames can be to the original fenestration. While the front and back elevations of this home are very different, the new steel windows successfully achieved the look that both the owner and the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust wanted, without detracting from the stunning character of the property.
The new windows and doors flood the interior of this Arts & Crafts style property with natural light.
The new windows and doors are high-performance, expertly engineered, double glazed units filled with krypton gas, making them more thermally efficient, while the slim frames allow the maximum amount of light to flood this Arts & Crafts house’s interior. Both the windows and the steel doors were polyester powder painted RAL 9005 Jet Black.

Where properties in the Hampstead Garden Suburb differ in style, we’re able to adapt our steel windows and doors products, creating bespoke solutions tailored to each property’s character. The owners of this early nineteenth century home (below) also chose Clement to carefully recreate the existing cottage pane style windows and doors of their property.
The windows in this property are cottage pane style, while the new steel doors are accessorised with Kensington handles.
All of the new fenestration needed to look similar to the original windows and doors but needed the additional benefit of an improved specification. Clement’s Brooking range with genuine T bars and classic Fenestra joints was used for the windows, and the doors were manufactured from W20 steel profiles. All the steel frames were painted RAL916 Traffic White with the handles to match.

The owners of this attractive, red brick family home added a kitchen extension, choosing Clement to ensure the new fenestration matched the existing style. The new steel windows were from our Brooking range, fitted with rectangular leaded lights, with the steel doors from our W20 range.
The new steel windows and doors from our Brooking and W20 ranges look stunning against the red brick façade.
Letting in lots of natural light to the kitchen extension, the steel windows and French doors were painted a dual colour – with the client choosing Pure White for the outside frames and Black Grey for the inside (below).
The windows and doors were painted dual colour, using Black Gray for the inside of the frames.

For this delightful Arts & Crafts home in the Suburb, the owners required new bespoke metal windows to match the original style. At Clement, with our wealth of experience in the area, we knew the slim frames of our Brooking range, combined with our W20 doors would work perfectly. The fenestration features genuine T bars, beautiful Fenestra joints and charming leaded light windows.
Clement’s slim frame Brooking windows and W20 doors create a beautiful aspect in this Arts & Crafts home.
The leaded light windows we replaced featured unique handle plates – we took templates of the existing handle plates to ensure that the new ones we crafted were as close to the originals as possible. Focusing on the smaller details like these and the window hinges resulted in a happy client as well as compliance with the Conservation Area and Listed Buildings requirements.
